Legacy Giving - Creating Your Own Legacy
You can leave a healing legacy in this world by making a legacy gift to Covenant House New York to benefit our young people. Every day, hundreds of homeless young people come to us to receive a gift of hope. Your legacy will mean hope to many more troubled youth in years ahead. Your legacy will provide absolute respect and unconditional love for the lost kids we'll welcome in future generations.
Legacy gifts can be accomplished in many ways with different benefits, such as the following:
Make a Will that Works The most common legacy gift is a gift through your Last Will and Testament. A Will is the first document people consider when they begin planning their legacies. It is also the last document, because any assets not provided for through other strategies will be handled under the terms of your Will. It's the final 'fail-safe' provision for 'everything else' that is discovered after you've gone.
To name Covenant House New York in your will, use the name
“Under-21, a New York not-for-profit corporation dba Covenant House New York”.
Name Your Beneficiaries Designating Covenant House New York a beneficiary on bank or brokerage accounts is a popular strategy for making a legacy gift. Making Covenant House a beneficiary of an IRA or 401K is especially popular now because of the heavy taxation these assets face in your estate. By making Covenant House the beneficiary of these accounts, the assets in the accounts are transferred directly to Covenant House upon your death. They are not subject to the terms of your will or probate court. Both income tax and estate tax are avoided.
Consider Life Insurance Life insurance can be used to create a legacy in many ways. Covenant House New York can be named a beneficiary of existing life insurance policies, if the insurance benefits are no longer needed. Existing whole life policies can be contributed outright during your lifetime providing a charitable income tax deduction in the year of the gift while funding your legacy. Life insurance can be used as a substitute for a charitable bequest through your will to increase confidentiality and insure your legacy isn't challenged in probate court. Wealth Repacement Life Insurance can be used to reduce the cost to surviving heirs of your legacy at Covenant House New York.
Witness your own legacy with Planned Giving You can combine good financial planning with legacy giving through Planned Giving. By making your legacy gift during your lifetime, you and your family can receive generous financial and tax benefits, assets can be put to good use, and you can personally witness your legacy gift achievement. The Gift Annuity is the most popular Planned Gift. Charitable Trusts are also available. Planned Gifts can take many forms combining imagination with opportunity and strategy.
