Catering with a Cause
Established in 1998, Ezekiel’s trains homeless CHNY residents and at-risk youth citywide to earn a nationally recognized food handler’s certificate, a prerequisite for many restaurant jobs. Such employment is a critical step as they make the journey from living on the streets to independence.
Ezekiel’s is housed at a CHNY center coincidently located in Hell’s Kitchen, on 41st Street and Tenth Avenue. The four-month long, rolling admissions program serves a small number of young people at a time, offering individual attention and the chance to cook in a large, state-of-the-art kitchen. Participants earn minimum wage as they learn kitchen prep, food safety and catering skills – every week they serve the food they’ve cooked to the CHNY community. In addition, the program serves as a catering business – all proceeds go back into the program, hence the tagline “Catering with a Cause” – that is regularly used by CHNY board members, partner companies and other advocates.
