On March 18th, Covenant House’s Home Team completed the NYC Half Marathon to raise money and awareness for homeless youth. Among our runners were three Covenant House New York residents, who were inspired to complete the race to show others just how much they could accomplish despite their personal struggles.
Covenant House was fortunate enough to receive clothing donations for our resident runners from The Running Company, an organization that specializes in running shoes, clothing and gear. Silas Carey, who works at the Upper East Side outlet, said, “I heard about the Home Team through Bill Cannon (who started the Home Team) and his daughter Suzanne. It occurred to me that I could probably get some things donated to them through our company, as we are always looking for ways to help the running community in any way that we can.”
Carey reached out to the regional manager and explained the situation, and was able to get a full set of running gear for each of our kids; shoes, shirt, shorts, socks, and some energy gels.
Carey continued, “I was very happy to be able to have gotten so much for them, and proud to be part of a company that was willing to help. The kids have had the odds stacked against them and to take on something as monumental as running a half marathon on top of the other obstacles they are overcoming shows tremendous resolve. I have met them all and I am very impressed with how positive and genuine they are. As a runner myself I know how draining it can be to train for a race, but also how rewarding it can be to go through that process, just being able to help the kids pursue their goals in running, and knowing that they will learn so much about themselves and what they are capable of is all the reward I need.”
Jim White, Executive Director of Covenant House New York, said, “We are incredibly grateful for The Running Company. The generous donations spread love to our New York community and helped our kids to fully believe in themselves and their capabilities with taking on the Half Marathon.”
Covenant House thanks The Running Company for its wonderful contribution to our kids and our community!
