Home Team 2012

On Sunday March 18th extraordinary Covenant House New York Board Member Kate Newcomb will take on the NYC Half Marathon to combat youth homelessness while representing Covenant House’s Home Team. This will be Kate’s first event with the Home Team, which consists of supporters, staff and donors who participate in a variety of athletic competitions to raise money and awareness for Covenant House.

Kate has been a long time supporter of Covenant House, and has served on the New York Board for eight years. When asked about her involvement with Covenant House, she said, “I have always been aware of Covenant House New York’s mission - my parents have been direct mail donors for years. However, I truly became involved through fellow board member and good friend Teresa Hamdan. Through Teresa’s involvement, I learned more about all the great work CHNY does. I was looking for an opportunity to give back in a more formalized construct, so Teresa asked me to interview and the rest is history.”

When discussing the biggest difficulty she faces in training for the Half Marathon, Kate said, “My biggest challenge is definitely getting myself out to do the long runs, but this is counteracted by the biggest reward: knowing that I am doing something good for a charity I so believe in.”

Kate hopes to use her fundraising efforts to teach others about Covenant House and the challenges faced by homeless youth. She says, “I hope to not only raise money for CHNY but to make others aware of the great work that Covenant House does, and also introduce some new donors to the organization.”

Jim White, Covenant House New York’s Executive Director said, “We are incredibly blessed to have individuals like Kate who are so dedicated to our kids and our ongoing battle against youth homelessness."
