September 13, 2006 -- Reaching the Youth through Music
Covenant House New York, the city’s largest privately funded childcare agency serving homeless and at-risk youth, is approaching this year by encouraging its youth to set high goals and work hard towards accomplishing them in a different manner. Through music, Covenant House hopes to inspire its youth to take a more proactive approach in gaining self-sufficiency and independence. Understanding that music plays an important role in the lives of the youth today, Covenant House has decided that on September 14, 2006 it will open its doors to a variety of talented young musicians, ranging from Hip-Hop to Soul to R&B, in order to send the message that anything is possible through desire and determination.
“The goal for this day is to inspire the youth to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. I believe that music is a great way to reach these youth,” stated Bruce J. Henry, Executive Director of Covenant House New York. “Each day, more and more youth enter our doors in search of guidance and support. They come for a number of different reasons although the outcome is always the same; the ability to gain independence and become a stable young adult. I believe that this concert will prove to be truly beneficial.” Covenant House New York, servicing all five boroughs, strives to assist and guide its youth towards a life of self-sufficiency and independence. Guided by its mission, Covenant House New York has been able to help thousands of youth obtain employment and places of their own to call home. The ‘Concert for Youth’ serves as a two - dimensional event, beginning with the concept that music will send a positive message to the youth and allow them to feel comfortable with themselves in order to develop the skills needed to live on their own. The second part focuses on the musicians, who have dedicated their time and ability and also have an opportunity to showcase their talent. With a wide range of performances, these musicians, signed and unsigned, have the chance to accomplish their goals and fulfill their dreams of one day becoming major performing artists.
